The Northrop P-61 was shrouded in secrecy from its inception. Known as the “Black Widow”, it was the first U.S. aircraft designed exclusively as a night fighter. Powered by Pratt and Whitney engines, the P-61 could reach a top speed of over 370 miles an hour. The P-61 was the most advanced night fighter of its day, possessing incredible capabilities of destruction. Four .50 caliber machine guns were mounted to the dorsal turret and four 20 millimeter cannons in the ventral location on the fuselage pod. The four .50 caliber machine guns were designed initially as defensive weapons and could be controlled by any one of the three crew members, pilot, rear gunner, or radar operator who sat in the extreme rear of the fuselage pod. The P-61Bs were painted black and they were almost invisible in the night skies.

The premier ace of World War II night fighter fame was Major Carrol C. Smith of the 418th Night Fighter Squadron Stationed in the Pacific. On December 29th, 1944, Major Smith and his radar operator, Lt. Philip Porter, accomplished a feat unheard of in night fighter history as they intercepted and destroyed four Japanese aircraft in a single night with their Times-A-Wastin’ P-61.

The Thunderbirds are the USAF Air Demonstration Squadron and have been entertaining people for over 65 years. The squadron was formed in 1953 using the straight wing F-84 Thunderjet. Then they transitioned to the swept wing F-84F because it had excellent cruising characteristics and predictable handling. In addition to the Thunderbirds, the F-84F was sold to many countries around the world. It even saw service during the Cold War.

The Most Spectacular aircraft in the world today is, without doubt, the SR-71 Blackbird. Holder of the world absolute speed and altitude records, 2,193 miles per hour at 85,069 feet, the SR-71 is the most advanced strategic reconnaissance vehicle ever designed. The Blackbird is a product of the famous “Skunk Work,” Lockheed’s Advanced Development Projects Group. The SR-71 design configuration is a modified, tailless delta with a blended forward wing called a chine. The Chine acts as a fixed canard to produce lift and decrease drag at cruising speed. The wing panels are noteworthy for their corrugated surfaces which not only add strength and stability on the wing, but help dissipate heat as well. The vertical stabilizers are all- moving surfaces which are two and a half times more effective than conventional rudders. The Blackbird is operated by a crew of two, a pilot and a reconnaissance systems officer. Power is provided by two Pratt and Whitney JT11D-20 engines whose military designation is J-58.

During World War II, the German military used the Stuka Dive Bomber as an extension of the artillery.  Beginning in 1939 with the Polish campaign, the Stuka delivered pinpoint accurate bombing before artillery units were in place.  The G-1 “Tank Buster” was the last version of the plane, and it played a significant role on the Eastern Front against Russian tanks.

In the early part of World War II, when the Luftwaffe controlled the skies, the Stuka was used very successfully.  The ear-splitting screech of its sirens struck fear into the enemy troops.  However, the Stuka was slow and light on weapons so, as the war progressed, these weaknesses made the Stuka less effective.

The UH-1 Iroquois, unofficially known as the Huey®, was the first production turbine-powered helicopter.  When ordered by the U.S. military in 1952, it was originally developed as a medical evacuation and utility helicopter.  The Hueys saw extensive service in Vietnam, but none more heroic than the missions flown by Major Bruce Crandall.

On Nov. 14, 1965, Major Crandall, Commander of A Company, 229th Aviation Battalion, flew 14 consecutive missions into a hot and deadly landing zone (LZ) to deliver supplies and evacuate wounded from the battle.  He flew a total of 3 different ships in his efforts to support the troops in this hot LZ.  On Feb. 26, 2007 Major Bruce Crandall was awarded the Medal of Honor for his heroic efforts.

As the Vietnam War expanded, the needs of the Navy and USAF could not be serviced by a single aircraft design.  The USAF stressed extra power and maneuverability for their needs in an air superiority fighter aircraft.  After many proposals, the selected design, F-15C Eagle, entered service in 1978.  It has an exceptional record of 100 victories and no losses in air-to-air combat.

The F-15C is powered by two F-100 engines, and can reach a top speed of Mach 2.5.  The pilot can fly up to 9 g and still maintain control.  It has an internal 20 mm M61 Vulcan cannon and a “look down/shoot down” radar system that can distinguish low flying aircraft from ground clutter.  The F-15 has been sold to other countries worldwide and is still in service today.  With continuing improvements, it is expected to still be around past 2025.

Design work on the F-22 Raptor started in 1984 at the request of the U.S. Air Force for an Advanced Tactical Fighter to replace the existing F-15 Eagle. The resulting F-22 is the most advanced and most expensive fighter jet in the world. It is made with the most sophisticated flight control systems and materials that have ever been developed. In additional it has a stealth like quality and cannot be detected on radar.  The production F-22 was delivered in January of 2003. Originally designed as an air superiority fighter, the F-22 has expanded to the role of a ground attack aircraft. All of the F-22 attack weapons are stored internally which helps it to avoid radar detection. In addition the F-22 has vectored thrusters which give it the ability to virtually fly straight up from a stationary position

The best known symbol of the air war over Germany during World War II is the iconic B-17 Flying Fortress.  It was designed to inflict heavy damage on the enemy, while protecting itself against enemy fire.  The B-17 had upwards of 7 defensive gun positions with .50 caliber machine guns.  It was capable of carrying over 4,000 lbs. of bombs, over 1,800 miles, at a cruising speed of 170 mph.  The “G” model was the last production version, and 8,600 aircraft were built over 23 months.

Before D-Day, the air campaign over Germany was the second front for the allied forces during World War II.  While suffering tremendous losses, the allied campaign brought the war home to Germany.  The Luftwaffe held the upper hand over these heroic crews of the B-17.  This changed drastically when the P-51 Mustang long-range fighter came into service and escorted the bombers.  The B-17s were used in both the European and Pacific theaters of the war.  Today, a handful of B-17s are still flying and reminding us of what sacrifices were made in defense of our country.

The F4U-4 Corsair single-seat Navy fighter was the last propeller-driven fighter made in the United States.
